Biography

Polina Isurin is an artist-teacher with over 15 years of experience in museums, schools, organizations, and universities. She holds an MFA in Studio Art from Tufts University, a PhD in Arts Administration, Education, and Policy from The Ohio State University, and is both committed and interested in how creative and pedagogical practices can coexist. Polina has taught a variety of visual art/culture courses (e.g. drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, digital video, AP Visual Art, International Baccalaureate Visual Art, courses within makerspaces) to middle, high school, and college level students, across four different states. She has been an advisor for National Art Honors Society, supervised preservice student art teachers in central Ohio, and presented/exhibited her research nationally and internationally. Within her interdisciplinary art practice, her cross-cultural and bilingual upbringing influence her exploration into how the sites and remnants of memories structure culture, society, and identity. Polina’s interdisciplinary art practice has always been dependent upon utilizing the medium most appropriate for the concept (or location), so she works with students and communities to produce site-specific artwork. These projects can involve murals, found materials, or natural elements, to name a few, and can be experiential, permanent, semi-permeant, or purely ephemeral. Working site-specifically teaches learners to focus on the process as much as the product and learn and respond from the environment in which they work.
