Marquette Stankowski

Marquette Stankowski has worked as an actor, teacher, and director for more than 20 years. He is currently the artist-in-residence at New Albany Primary School and New Albany Early Learning Center. In his role, he develops and leads two signature experience programs in which all students in two grade levels participate. The Carnival of the Animals is the first grade experience that culminates in a dance and poetry performance. The second grade experience, The Journey, combines music, poetry, dance and visual art with the school’s second grade science curriculum. It also culminates with a performance at New Albany’s McCoy Center for the Performing Arts. At the Early Learning Center he works with Kindergarten students on a Pre-Carnival project in which classes create new animals.

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marquette’s professional background includes performing and teaching theater courses, public speaking, and film making at the middle school, high school, and university levels. He holds an MFA in Acting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a BA in Theater Arts from Marquette University. Before moving to Ohio, Marquette interned at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and was Fine Arts Chair and Drama Department Chair at the University School of Milwaukee (USM). His directing credits at USM include Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Sound of Music, Pygmalion, and A Month In The Country, After Turgenev. Marquette specializes in creating multidisciplinary projects that combine public performance and arts-integrated learning.

RECENT PROJECTS: “The Carnival of the Animals,” New Albany Primary School, First Grade, part of a year-long artist residency creating multidisciplinary arts-integrated project: Fifteen first grade classes prepared for and participated in one of four evening performances that combined dance, poetry and visual arts. Preparatory lessons included collaborative team work, voice and movement skills, poetry writing, as well as opportunities for solo and group performance.
“The Journey,” New Albany Primary School, Second Grade, part of a year-long artist residency creating multidisciplinary arts-integrated project: Sixteen second grade classes prepared for and participated in one of four evening performances that combined music, dance, poetry, public speaking and visual arts. Preparatory lessons included collaborative team work, voice and movement skills, poetry writing, acting, and group performance. In addition, every student had the opportunity to speak on their own in front of the audience.

“Our Animal Discovery,” New Albany Early Learning Center, Kindergarten: Marquette works with fifteen Kindergarten classes to create or “discover” an imaginary animal through lesson in math, language arts, health and science. Each class also writes and performs a three-stanza poem about their animal in the form of the nursery rhyme Pease Porridge. All ELC Pre-Kindergarten classes also join Kindergarten classes in the Winter Health Walk that focusses on improving our physical, mental and social health through creative activities.
