Biography

Andrea McCormick is a performing artist and instructor from Cleveland, Ohio who has received her Bachelor of Arts from Wright State University in Theatre Studies, with an emphasis on Dance and Applied Voice. Beginning with ballet at three years of age, she also continued her studies in various dance forms, including tap, African folk dance, liturgical/spiritual, jazz, musical theatre dance, modern/contemporary, hip hop, and Latin ballroom.

Post college, under the stage name “Andrea Belser”, Andrea has remained extremely active in the northeast Ohio theater community, receiving 2008 Best Actress in Cleveland for her role as Juliette in “I Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me by a Young Lady from Rwanda” at Dobama Theatre, and nomination as 2012 Best Actress in Cleveland for her role as Pecola in “The Bluest Eye” at Karamu House Theatre.

She presents herself on and off stage, doing anything from acting, dancing, or singing to stage manager, choreographer, or costume assistant. She has also worked with several theaters, including but not limited to Karamu House, Cleveland Public Theatre, Cleveland School of the Arts, Near West Theatre, The Fine Arts Association, The Lantern Theatre, Spark Theatre4Youth, and Talespinner Children’s Theatre. Since 2009, Andrea has taught drama/theatre arts, musical theatre, and various dance in different theaters, outreach programs, and venues, both in groups or private lessons.

In addition to the credentialed badges listed below that Andrea has received from the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning, she also holds a Level I Physically Integrated Dance Teaching Artist Certificate from Dancing Wheels, making her well-qualified to teach wheelchair techniques in dance, alternative translations of movement for physically impaired dancers, as well as other methods of inclusion for dancers with special needs.

The award of this badge shows that the artist participated in a two-day workshop at the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning that focused on understanding arts integration, domains of youth development, behavior management, academic and fine arts standards, outcomes and indicators, and learning strategies and activities. The earner developed a program plan to apply these concepts in their work with students, earning a score of 75% or greater related to specific scoring criteria.The award of this badge, “Behavior Management: A Guide to Creative Chaos,” is the third module in the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning’s (CAL) teaching artist professional development series that provides attendees an understanding of the ages and stages of all learners and adaptation skills for arts activities using the Universal Design for Learning. The earner has recognized physical, cognitive, social, and literacy development benchmarks specific to the different ages of students and has demonstrated an understanding of the students they will likely encounter to help determine ways to help manage their behaviors through the arts.The award of this badge shows that the artist participated in a workshop at the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning that focused specifically on building the capacity of teaching artists across Ohio to provide exceptional services to students with disabilities. Teaching artists received six hours of intensive training that imparted the knowledge and skills to effectively and confidently instruct inclusive, equitable arts programming.
